(click on pic to enlarge) This is not a great picture because the bird was a long way away and I got as close to it as I could before the railway track started hiding it from view (that is what you can see in the foreground) It is also cropped drastically. Any idea which hawk this one is? For some reason I am having problems loading the pic. I have seen it around more, probably attracted by the sparrows that I feed.

Your hawk is a Redtail.
They are a rather large hawk frequently seen sitting along highways and meadow edges watching for prey.
I have been trying to get a good shot of one all winter but to I havent't got one to suit me yet.
I think it is a red tail hawk too, Lori. I saw its red tail or part of it but thought it might be the sun and the way the pic was taken.

As a nature lover I am so pleased that I found your blog...the photos of the snake devouring his meal ..I hear you on feeling a bit squeemish in doing so...I looked at every image instead of turning away!! Abe has taught me to stay with your subject..no matter how disturbing. I am one that is always wanting to save Nature visitors that come to my view but they must live with their own rules without my interferance at times.
I am reading in your profile that you have many horses..my hubby surely would L O V E visiting your place! I can identify with your wounded colt as I am recovering from a fractured ankle and my scar looks the same..healing well.I hope to visit once again.

BTW I fractured my ankle 2 wks. before Christmas getting bird seed from the garage to fill up the feeders....oh boy what I do for my birds and squirrels and possum
and..well come and see. :)
